3Dfx wasn't sunk, it was purchased by nVidia as a move to eliminate a competitor. It was a sad sad day when they announced that they would not be using any 3Dfx technology.

3dfx let themselves be bought out, because they were hemorrhaging money, and couldn't compete any longer.
