The price of 9600gt is a bit too high. Almost at the price of 3870. And theres a huge resemblance to 8800gt in terms of designs. Maybe NVIDIA just did a die shrink of 8800gt to get the 9600gt just like what ATI did with the 2900xt to 3870.

That's what I meant. It's just a die shrink from g92 core to to g94. That's why its still has no support for DirectX 10.1. But I think that's quite sufficient to make ATI/AMD to drop their 3850/3870 price a little.

@anonymouse - That depends on the game and the rest of the settings and the amount of AA .

And to the people complaining about the lack of DX10.1 support... who
gives a crap if it doesn't support it ? DX10.1 adds nothing new the
game developers are even remotely interested in .

P.S. it isn't exactly slaughtering the HD 3800's , nor the 8800's though... in many apps it's even a bit slower... so don't get this if you've already bought a HD 3800 or a 8800 card and think you made a mistake .

As you can see, the texturing units are the way to go, unfortunate for AMD that can�t see that. If they made a 3950 with 24 or 32 texturing units, even with fewer stream procs they would beat the 8800GTX, and with more ROPs it would beat the 8800GTX even with 6X AA at the highest resoluiont

the success of the DX10.1 is in the hands of the game developers. if it will spread and DX10 cards can't run in 10.1 mode then every NVIDIA card will be outdated. can you remember the X800 vs. 6800 battle?? And in the future every NVIDIA user will regret that they wouldn't bouhgt an ATI card. maybe the 8800GT is faster than but if can't handle a specific effect (for example: Global Illumination) then the game will be not just simply slow but it won't run at all. (yeah lots of X850 XT owners are banging their heads to the wall because maybe 7600GT is a bit slower than it but can run every game on minimum detail)

It's a mid-range card not a high-end card. Wait for the other 9 series if you want a card that outperforms 8800GTS/GT/GTX. It runs between a HD3850 and a HD3870. In fact, it runs better than the 3870 if AA is turned on.

The 320 stream processor architecture of ATI is different from the one from nvidia. So you can't compare them apples to apples. Roughly speaking the ATI processors have about 320/5 = 64 processors (nvidia equivalent) due to the fact that most games do not split/take advantage of the ATI architecture.

Who cares about DX10.1, it's only a rather minor update. Sure you got some "new" features, but most games aren't even DX10 yet. If game developers develop games for hardware only a small portion of people have, then it's their loss - they lose sales. So by the time DX10.1 becomes the norm, the 3850/3870 would be outdated so the point is rather moot.

The 320 stream processors are not comparable to 64 Nvidia Stream processors.
Nvidia uses one MADD FOR EVERY MULL(one to one proportion), AMD uses 4 to one, the 320 are 320, it is just much harder to achiev the same eficiency, because its a much more complex structure.
What AMD GPUs realy misses are the texturing Units, any 8800 or 9600 have more, wich benefits better today games.
AMD have a more futuristc look about what will be required, thats good(alas DX 10.1, more powerfull shading), but saddly they forgot to look to the very present.

Just for all you people who are crying about DX10.1 support, LOOK AT WHAT IT DOES:

FORCES 4xAA for 32/64 bit pixels
FORCES STANDARDIZED AA SAMPLE PATTERNS
FORCES 32bit Floating Point filtering

All of this was OPTIONAL in DX10, meaning developers had a CHOICE on whether or not to use these options.

The only GOOD things which I could find are in PS4.1. Basically PS4.1 allows a developer to write AA filters in shader form.

WOW THIS IS BIG STUFF!!! I WONDER WHY NV DOESN'T INCLUDE IT IN THEIR GPUS!

All it does is limit the choices which developers and chipmakers have.

On the card, it kills the 3850 and performs on par or better than the 3870 and 8800GS. It can catch the 8800GT in rare cases. It is basically a killer midrange card.

Thumb: It depends on what resolution you play at and how good of a deal you can find. Both cards are good by today's standards, although if you are planning on gaming at 1280x1024 or below and/or can't find any good deals for an 8800gt, get an oc'd version of the 9600gt and be happy.

People please stop using ATI name! It's AMD from a long time. Even when you look on the price list you'll see AMD Radeon not ATI radeon... I bought Chaintech 9600GT and I can say that it has a slide burst on FPS games compared to 8800gts/640 but in a games like Crysis for example the higher number of Steam processors gives 8800gt/gts a slight advantage of app 7-15% FPS but the price difference between 8800gt and 9600gt at the moment is on 9600's advantage

On a related note. I bought the Asus 9600GT 512M and I personaly think this is a great card all around. I would say the 9600GT is the better buy over the 8800GT as well for several reasons all of which can be looked up by comparing the two cards from this database. Cheers!

8600 GT -> 32 shader processors at 1180mhz = 113 GFLOPS

9600 GT -> 64 shader processors at 1625mhz = 208 GFLOPS ??

84% more GFLOPS for 2x the shader processors and 38% increase in clockspeed make no sense.

I've this card and just to give you an idea with everything maxed, 1600x1200 resolution with 16xAA (yes 16x) i still get playable framerate in left 4 dead (30-40 fps). Only cpu power matter with the source engine.

How can this card handle crysis on my system?
Dell Inspiron 530
q6600@2.4GHz, 4Gb DDR2 ram, 500GB HDD, 16xDVD Rewriter,350W PSu.
That Psu is enough even for 9800Gt and i have confirmed it so just tell me how much fps i will get.
At present 128MB 8300GS in 800x600 and everything on low i am getting 7FPS in "core" stage others at 15-20FPS.

It will run Crysis just fine at low-mid resolutions (1024x768, 1152x864) on high settings without AA.

I see that many of you people commenting don't own a 9600GT. I have the Palit Supersonic 1GB 9600GT. This card is superior to the 8800GT and cannot be compared to the ATI 4850. I own both cards, and games designed to utilize the PhysX hardware run better on NVIDIA cards. This card runs cooler than the 4850, the only downside is that HDMI audio is not built in, and the card is also longer than the 4850. It blocks 3 of my SATA ports, whereas the 4850 blocks no ports.
