Radeon HD 7950 will not share a common design with the HD 7970.

Thanks to images released by OBR-Hardware.com, we now know that the Radeon HD 7950 will not share a common reference design with the HD 7970, meaning the chances of "unlocking" the card into a 7970 have all but dissipated.

No unlocking... that's more one of those things either company slips out of their sleeve when they have a reason to really keep the buzz on their products.

This time a bunch of things are messing and or missing to have AMD consider that a viable marketing move. A) Chip production is not a nature process, low yields of "full" Tahiti to offer that; B) No competition they own all the Buzz; C) Do it to often and folks come to expect it and wait. Niether want folks on the sideline thinking they'll wait it out every new release. D) Only need one reference board to release like they did with "Bart" quick fast and cut their costs.

It has its' place the last time around as all the "stars" aligned, this time a regular new release they've no reason to pull an "Ace" from their sleeve.

It's not like the 7950 is massively cheaper than the 7970 anyway and nobody who's buying these things is doing so with the change in their couch. If someone is willing to spend $450 on a 7950, why not $550 on 7970? The rest of us will have to make do with the HD7770. (Quite a lucky card!)

Personally I think $399 would have been a better price for the 7950 - it would be a price difference people could notice instead of being "almost five hundred bucks."
