Hey, look over here! We got cards that run at 1GHz! (Buy them!)

While this is pretty awesome news, I can't help but feel like AMD is trying to attract some attention (and some dollars) with this stunt. I think they are hoping that 1GHz graphics cards may entice apathetic buyers into purchasing the HD 4890 instead of waiting for the next wave. According to the release, Sapphire, XFX, Asus and TUL (PowerColor) will be the first manufacturers to get the new HD 4890 in stores.

Attention Whore

The more popular and well known attention whore picture is a little too NSFW, but that won't stop me from linking to it...

nVidia has had their shader processors running well over a GHz for quite some time now.

"I can't help but feel like AMD is trying to attract some attention (and some dollars) with this stunt." Stunt... It's called be marketing... Although this doesn't hold a candle to the lame brain stunts' Nvidia has perpetrated on consumers over the last year! The re-naming game and now stuff like the down grade of a GSO with 128-bit and DDR2, meaning it's like 9500.5POS that sucks power. Please I'll embrace an ATI milestone like hitting 1Ghz objectively, not like if Nvidia did it they would be pricing it at $600.

If the 4890 is "Attention Whore", the GTX 295 would be "Attention Whore X2"

@Casecutter Are you suggesting that I (or we) are "teh biased"? I'll have you know that we are trying to convince AMD to send us some cards for review so that we have more than just Nvidia product reviews under our belt. We really want to be unbiased in our news and reviews but it would help if: 1. We got review hardware from both Nvidia and AMD 2. Nvidia and AMD stopped doing hilarious or nefarious things in respect to their marketing and/or business practices. In closing, we are not going to sugar coat or ignore the boneheaded actions of either company. It's all for you, dear readers.

Hitting 1 Ghz isn't that difficult on a HD 4890 . But good to know , that there are cards for people who are too lazy to overclock their cards :P .
Lol at the Darth Vader lego fella , though .
I'd really like to see what this card can do under LN2 .

Well Steve when you're dis'n their milestone achievement... ATI or at least their marketing will not be so engaging to impart cards for product reviews. Every time Nvidia/ATI do something it basically a rehash of some kind of existing technology and we don't call it some "stunt" but it almost always is. While calling the achievement of bring 1Ghz cards to market a stunt... someone had to and they're there first with a great stunt. As to say your being completely impartial, unbiased, and independent, not many tech-sites aren't without some predisposed thoughts. A quick run through the home page (green) 80% of the content is Nvidia approved and "We heart BFG" doesn't project a neutral, objective, common ground. I'm the first one to not sugar coat or ignore bonehead marketing such stuff is despicable. As to the creation and development of the technology and manufacturing processes, I give the engineers a lot of respite to what they accomplish. Sometimes marketing provides great direction on where and what to design, other times they're just deluded with "we can do no wrong" and send design teams down a rabbit trail that consumes money, resources, and delivers a product that can not provide competition in the market. Marketing makes the company bed.

@ultima I'm just saying that this announcement is pretty artificial. When AMD announced the first 1GHz CPU, that CPU outperformed every other CPU on the market. That's not true of this card. It's not going to be the fastest card on the market. Also, nVidia has been running their shader processors way over a GHz forever. Sure, ATi clocked their ROPs and TMUs to 1GHz, congrats. But to compare this to the 1GHz Athlon launch is kinda BS.

@Casecutter Relax.

Is no one mentioning that a full 1ghz is 150mhz over the stock clock of the 4890? It's kind of uncommon for manufacturers to put THAT much of a factory overclock on a card.

I will agree that it's a bit late in the game for DX10 for the manufacturers to be doing stuff like they have been doing though. That applies to the GTX295/275 also.

The 1 Ghz cards are REAL , NOTICEABLE improvements over stock clocks ... not the usual 10 Mhz bump and labelling the card "factory OC" .
I trust forum users with the actual cards more than any review site .
Seriously , I kinda agree with Casecutter .

I thought as much. It's more than even the difference between the 750mhz 4870 and the 850mhz stock 4890, and look what performance difference 100mhz made.

I've been looking at a few benchies and it looks like at 1ghz it's competing directly (and winning a fair bit) against the GTX285.

I'm going to retract my previous statement a little bit and go ahead to say that ATI did good here, even if it is a little late.

This is going offtopic ... but sod that .
I sincerely hope I did not . I'd rather see it not released , than made by EA/Ubisoft .
