GTS 250 1GB versus 9800 GTX+ review.

Test Setup

We'll be running the GTS 250 through a few benchmarks just to verify that it equals the 9800 GTX+ performance-wise.

Our review "software suite" consists of:

  • 182.06 WHQL drivers from Palit
  • Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit
  • 3DMark Vantage
  • F.E.A.R. 2
  • Far Cry 2

Our review hardware consists of (my PC):

  • CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad QX6700 @2,666MHz
  • Motherboard: MSI P7N SLI Platinum
  • Video Cards: Evga 9800 GTX+ (512-P3-N844-AR) and Palit GTS 250
  • Memory: 4GB (2x 2GB) Corsair Dominator PC2-8500 @800MHz
  • Hard Drive: Western Digital 250GB SATA 7,200RPM
  • PSU: Enermax Galaxy DXX 1,000 Watt
  • PC Monitor: Samsung 20" 204B LCD
  • HDTV: Sharp LC-37GP1U 37" 1080p LCD

Our testing methodology involves me playing a game and recording 2 minute sections using Fraps. I get at least 3 two minute runs and then I average the Minimum, Maximum and Average FPS numbers. The settings are kept the same for both graphics cards. No filtering or antialiasing were used while running the 3DMark benchmarks.

I hope you test those 3D glasses soon, cause I'm very eager to see some result in fear2.
Hope to be really scary w/ those glasses.

Well it does change things in pricing as ATI is aggressively pricing the 4870 512Mb and probably has more breathing room to offer 1Gb units at $150 and get a descent return given the lower cost of GDDR5 then Nvidia. As to the review it would have been nice to have a 4870 512Mb to show some point of competitive comparison.

Thanks so much for this review. I've been looking into getting a 9800 GTX but after reading this I've decided to wait until the GTS 250s start coming out. Great review and I'm anticipating more.

Wow, thanks for the review. I can't wait for the liquidation sales and price drops so I can get a 9800 GTX . I can now clearly see that the only thing I am losing to the GTS 250 is well nothing.

P.S. I have checked other review and I see the only real difference in the 9800 GTX and the GTS 250 is the GTS 250 is shorter, and uses slightly less power.
