GTS 250 1GB versus 9800 GTX+ review.

The Palit GTS 250 1GB

Palit was kind enough to send us a GeForce GTS 250 for this review. I was a little confused when I first installed the card and it reported 1GB of memory. The box we received was clearly labeled 512MB (as you can see in the picture below).

Palit GeForce GTS 250

As any good computer nerd would do, I consulted GPU-Z to clear things up:

When asked, Palit said that the wrong sticker must have been put on the box at the factory. So while I thought it was cool to get the 1GB version, I was disappointed because I was planning on using the GTS 250 and 9800 GTX+ together in SLI. Nvidia has stated that it is possible to SLI the 512MB GTS 250 with the 9800 GTX+, but I wanted to test it out for you guys. (btw... Palit assured me that my GTS 250 is 55nm even though GPU-Z says otherwise)

As you can see from the pictures below, the GTS 250 is practically identical to the latest version of the GeForce 9800 GTX+.

I hope you test those 3D glasses soon, cause I'm very eager to see some result in fear2.
Hope to be really scary w/ those glasses.

Well it does change things in pricing as ATI is aggressively pricing the 4870 512Mb and probably has more breathing room to offer 1Gb units at $150 and get a descent return given the lower cost of GDDR5 then Nvidia. As to the review it would have been nice to have a 4870 512Mb to show some point of competitive comparison.

Thanks so much for this review. I've been looking into getting a 9800 GTX but after reading this I've decided to wait until the GTS 250s start coming out. Great review and I'm anticipating more.

Wow, thanks for the review. I can't wait for the liquidation sales and price drops so I can get a 9800 GTX . I can now clearly see that the only thing I am losing to the GTS 250 is well nothing.

P.S. I have checked other review and I see the only real difference in the 9800 GTX and the GTS 250 is the GTS 250 is shorter, and uses slightly less power.
