Is it nvidia's doctrine, do not support dx10.1?

Yes. DX10.1 is pointless. There are no 10.1 games out right now, and I don't know of any that are coming out this year.

Also, the shader clock of 1,300MHz is very very low. 1,300 is either incorrect, or users will be able to overclock their shaders to over 1,600 at least.
Tuesday, June 03, 2008 4:14:50 PM
yeah but think about it its 300 mhz slower then the G92 shader clock but it has double the shaders almost its massivly impressive its probably easily overclockable!

624 GFLOPS ? Are you sure ?

DirectX 10.1 is essentially meaningless. And the shader clock is most likely correct. It's relatively low because there's a huge number of transistors and they're still using the 65nm process. So this chip is probably extremely hot at that speed.

I expect to see huge overclocks with water-cooling.

GT200s are just about as monstrous as was expected.

DX10.1 is mostly an added limitation microsoft is trying to impose on it's api's, and ATI is trying to claim as a huge advantage over NV cards.

Seems like the card we've been waiting for, for a year. Now it's too late.

I wonder if my HR-03 GT will fit on this card. If so, I'd be very interested to see how high I can take the shader clock. My GTS's load at 50C.

I think we're looking at another two year long king, or at least a two year long king when overclocked hard. :)
Thursday, June 05, 2008 7:20:05 PM
aww mike, god damnit, your going to make me spend more money again... I said my plan was x-mas this year for a core 2 Q9450 for $200... off ebay if need be, but I was expecting an extra 30% performance from nehalem clock for clock, now some estimates say 50%?! now your saying with a WC loop, which I plan to do, you expect monster overclocks (not to mention monster power consumption) and monster performance? I was really happy with the idea of a Q9450 and an HD4870X2, and now I think you might have ruined it.
Thursday, June 05, 2008 11:07:27 PM
looks very similar to the 8800GTX & GTS launch. Makes me wonder if this card will be the king for a long time much like the 8800GTX and more importantly if there will be a best bang for buck die shrink '8800GT equivilant' of these cards in the future.

This card most likely is going to get creamed by the HD 4870 X2 , it'll run hot , it'll be a power pig and it'll be very expensive . And nVidia wont be selling it with a huge profit due to the MASSIVE and EXTREMELY complex core .
Monday, June 09, 2008 4:56:35 PM
i think that the GTX 280 has 933 GFLOPS not 624 ?!!

Yeah... I was wondering about that aswell... that it should have 933 GFLOPS .

I wonder if the benchmarks in the "TheInquirer" should be deemed credible.

but still, it ran faster on DX10.1. I wonder what's stopping nvidia from employing DX10.1

From what I recall , it had worse texture quality ( not noticeable , unless you stare at a zoomed in screenshot for a minute or two ) .

So I think the gtx200b will have better shaders, which will be really nice since its the bottleneck of the 280gtx performance

@McArthur - if they make a sandwich (like they usually do) out of it , it wouldn't have such a massive PCB , though .

They'll have to have some sort of magical cream filling that can take care of two really hot cores for that sandwich

How come this card has less shader procesors (240 vs 256) and lower shader clock , and still has more GFLOPS than 9800 GX2 ??? Can someone explain that ?

It has some special hardware in it that is made for general computing. They also did some other fine-detail changes that make it go faster.
Wednesday, December 31, 2008 8:12:14 PM
Personally, I think this, and the 4870 are excessively powerful. I think nVidia and ATI should slow down with the new, more powerful cards until game can catch up. I mean there is no need to have anything faster then say...a 9800GT, or 4850.
