I have not yet had time to properly redesign the database for video cards featuring unified shader architectures...so take these specs with a grain of salt. I'll be updating this page as I get things sorted out.

What! 32 texture units? No! I thought it had 64! Mike please tell me this is an error and you'll fix it.

32 texture units isint bad . 6 more than on a 7900GTX >_>
anyway shader operations / fragment pipelines is what matter the most. cause new games are gonna be really shader-heavy.

I also ought this card and i must say it is hard to tell a difference from my old x1900xt (in image quality) But i'm happy i'm dx10 ready. Also if i use rivatuner will it show me exactly how many tmu's it has? And are there any apps i can use to get the most performance out of this card without overclocking.

This card will give u so much more with a larger monitor. Try to invest in this.

I wish i could but i think my card may be defective or something the enviroments dont look that much better in bf2. Maybe i have a few defective Texture units?
Friday, November 17, 2006 5:41:00 AM
@ Dave: The game wont look better on the 8800 GTS, than it would on the 7900 series.. The image quality is the same, except for the ability to perform HDR AA and 16xQAA on a single card. And also there is something called "next-gen effects", or next-gen something that inhances game beyond anything possible before, give it a try.

nice card but lack future dynamic branching power compared to it's current R580 cards and upcoming R600 cards.

Besides that i don't like what both ATI and Nvida are doing; increasing size of their cards by each generation just to add more beef to them. I would prefer it if they both would just try to come up a way to get more beef and smaller size; like what intel did with their c2d conroe processors.

Agreed anonymous! I really hate it when i boot up and my card screams at me for 30 seconds cause my psu takes awhile to get to full wattage.
Tuesday, November 21, 2006 9:58:09 PM
@ Anon: The card might be bigger, but it takes almost the same ammount of power as the X1900. And thats exactly what C2D does, the CPU isn't in any way.. smaller or bigger cause they never change in size, but the C2D take less power and perform better, and thats the point

@ Dave: It's in the nVidia Control Panel.

Thats because its not in it's natural habitat - DX10, and also the GTS has 1/2 of the texture fill, compared to the GX2.

I have this card (eVGA) installed in a homebuilt system with an Intel E6300, 2GB's of RAM on the eVGA 680i. Works like a dream, blazes through everything I own. Every game I've installed, I've been able to completely max in-game settings (AA, AF, etc.) without anything dropping @ 1680x1050. Very, very pleasantly impressed with it.

think so if you don't have too many drives. 180 is what they recommend but if its a quality one it will do ok cause i think they factor in cheap ones and power hungry CPU's and multiple drives when giving requirements .

Hello everyone. Just want you all to know that I don't really know much about graphic cards.
Well right now I'm having a GeForce 6200SE ( hehe I know it sucks ) But still I did buy BF2 and BF2142 and was able to run them with loooow graphics which i didn't mind in the start. But now i'm gettign a new PC which uses XFX GeForce 8800GTS 320MB.
My question is: - Will I be able to run BF2 and BF2142 and like Quake4 on HIGHEST graphics? And will it run well? Like no ' lagging ' and so on?

And if there is something I need to do with my card like upgrade it or something later, then pleae contact me at MSN or just E-Mail at : Robban_b4p@hotmail.com

Thank you in advance!

Mike: we need a paged comment system!

the 8800GTS 320mb's major downfall will be in cranking the AA but also in games which have unusually high resolution textrues. I'm betting it'l handle 1440X900 just as well as the 8800GTS 640mb but not much higher, for something like the new unreal engine (Bioshock, UT3), with full in game textures. If you have a 20" or 22" monitor, You will be able to use this card at 1600 X 1200 or 1600 X 1000, but it would be best to turn the texture detain down to medium.

The real difference is that the 640MB can go on higher amounts of AA and a higher resolution without starting to chug , while the 320MB can't . ( depends on the game , but I'm talking about newer ones . )

^ Get a GTS 640MB. it'll run everything great. The 2900 runs a bit hot and requires a bit more power. Just google GTS reviews and 2900 reviews.

HD 2900 XT is more futureproof though , I'd get the HD 2900 XT . But when it comes to today's games performance , it doesn't matter which one you get - the FPS will be very high anyway .
And yeah... it's a power pig and a heater , neither of which a desktop user should be concerned of .

There is absolutely no conclusive evidence that shows the HD 2900XT to be any more futureproof than the 8800GTS. The scalar architecture on the 8800s is almost certainly better suited to diverse DX10 workloads, so, if anything, I would give an edge to the 8800GTS in the futureproofness department. Though, such arguments are often pointless. You're talking about maybe a few more FPS 2 years from now.

A 3850 will only outperform this is very low resolutions (1024x768), where you dont need that much power anyways as most of it is just thrown away.

This was the last card I bought (640MB) before my AMD rig turned into trash, and I upgraded to a Duel core config, and later (thank you tax return) to a quad core. I must admit for the year and half i had this card, it was impressive I could run everything as well as i could. I mean this card was very good performance to price ratio, at least for me.
Sunday, January 04, 2009 5:04:06 AM
People overlook an advantage that this card has. It is compatible with 8x PCI-E 1.0, which causes most PCI-E 2.0 cards to malfunction. If you have an old OEM dell that has the older PCI-E this is the best card you can get.

What makes the 8800 GTS 320 so great is its forced obsolescence. It has roughly equal performance to the ATI 3850 or the Nvidia 9600 GT, and yet you can buy it on eBay for half the price of either of those cards simply because it is "out of style".

You can play Crysis on 1152x864 at all high settings with no problem with this card.
