Default Sound Recording Software

I was trying different ways to record my Computer system sounds, like Movie sounds or songs, something like that. I have a microphone but when I put it near the speaker and start recording, the sound quality sux like hell, when I tried to modify the options in Voice Recorder (Given on Windows XP) I don't know how to make my record my system's sound, is there any software to let me record system sounds?? I need it because I was trying to make a Video Clip out of Garry's Mod

Default Feedback?

I'm not an expert, but I did have a band and do some recording at church, you might have to plug your microphone into a taperecorder and then trasfer it to the computer. Just a thought.

I seem to recall finding the files once in my windows directory...

I do recall some fairly odd things though...

Windows XP. That's the software for you.

You're all wrong.

For vista the problem isn't recording & saving the sounds, it's accessing them.

Props for audacity though. It will work on vista btw.
