Try uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling...

Try uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them, or even try an earlier version. From the sounds of it, the driver isn't executing properly when entering 3D mode.

See if your card has a revision of the BIOS...

See if your card has a revision of the BIOS installed so that the fan doesn't want to be stuck at 30% all the time. You don't want to have fried your card the first time you take it out dancing.

Actually those first two things about power are true wyz, but from what I;ve seen, the GTX280s overclock beautifully. If you want to talk power consumption, look at the HD4870X2. ;)

As far as a PSU goes, look at some modular Corsairs, like their 620W version. Keeps the case nice and clean and the brand has a solid reputation.
