is it worth 400 bucks to replace my dual 9800gtx+'s with single 280???

Well dual 9800 GTX+'s would still be faster by a bit. But if you decide that you buy a GTX280 now then down the road you can buy another.

2 GTX280's would smoke 2 9800 GTX+'s. I would go for it. I mean your games will still play good with one GTX280.

i don't think you would gain much by doing that upgrade

no, but if but if that $400 is putting a hole in your pocket, you could put some/alot of it into a high end cooling setup for those cards and see how fast Nvidia can really take its 55nm chips. That said, youd get more return out of a memory overclock.

No, it would be a pointless upgrade.

The only way it would be good is if you planned on throwing 2 of them in your machine. You'd be better off waiting for the price to drop and getting both cards at once if you want to go that route.
