When I bought my computer back in 2005, I wanted the best hot rod I could afford and cost was only a moderate consideration. Consequently, I went with dual EVGA 8800gt 512mb cards in SLI. A couple months ago, one of the cards went bad. I was fortunate enough to pick a used one up on EBay for a relative song. This week, the remaining original card went out. I'm reduced to running on a "wing and a prayer" with a used card of unknown history. It could last forever or it could die tomorrow.

In the meantime, I've come to realize that my souped up (although now somewhat dinged and dated) hot rod, while beautiful to behold, is sadly underused. I just don't play a lot of Half Life 2 or Crysis type, graphically demanding video games. I'm more a turn-based strategy gamer, many of them older, games which don't tend to demand earth-shattering graphic performance. And, due to changing circumstances, cost is a much larger consideration this time around.

I've been doing a bit of comparison shopping and discovered that I could get a couple 8600gt 1GB cards for less than the cost of a single 8800gt-- and I'd have 2 brand new cards (and warranties) rather than one new and one used. Given that my graphics demands are not all that heavy, would this be a good way to go?

i would probably recommend just 1 9600GT, which should be less expensive then 2 8600GT. i dont know if the 86GTs scale well but my 88GTs in SLI were troublemakers. i dont know about your experience with SLI with your former 88GTs.
I also think 1 9600GT would be faster than 2 8600GTs.
wait until more replies from people.

I never had a lick of trouble with my 88s in or out of SLI until they just crapped out. :(

Checking TigerDirect, I see an EVGA 9600gt 1GB for $109. They have a KFA 8600gt 1MB for $70, so one 9600 would be less. Maybe I could luck into a used (cheap) second on EBay for SLI...

Same size as yours. I just assumed, like with RAM, more is better.

well yea it is better to have a 1gig over 512MB, its just that 1 gig will really show its use at a higher resolution than 1440x900.
i mean crysis will be happy to use it up at that resolution, but i dont think any other games will utilize all of it.
i mean u can get it now, and then later upgrade ur monitor if u wanted lol.
but on a serious note, the 9600GT is one of the best cards for performance/price ratio.

In reviews I have read the 1gb version of the 9600GT only gets roughly 1% more frames per second on average. The GPU just doesn't have enough power to utilize all of the ram, or it just wasn't designed to have that much (likely a combination of the two). You will get a much higher boost in performance (~10%) by purchasing the cheapest one possible and overclocking it yourself instead of paying for and extra 512mb of wasted memory. The 9600GT is a very solid overclocker from the reviews I have read.:D

Also the 8600GT SLI will be terrible in comparison to the 9600GT. All you will get is the loss of dual monitor support and lower frames per second with a 8600GT SLI.

Any thoughts on-- or experience with-- the XfX 9600gt 512mb Alpha Dog? This looks like a hot card and I like the lifetime  warranty.

like ive said before i think 9600gt is a best buy, its only a few steps behind the 88GT, its also cooler than the 88GT.
i do trust xfx nvidias, as well as evgas.
buy it man, im sure ur gonna love it, because it really is a performer for its price.

Just a quick update to let you know that the 9600 was a great suggestion! I'm really pleased with it. It's quiet and cool (in the temperature sense, although it's cool to operate, too). In fact, I was so impressed that when I ordered a new computer as a graduation present for my son, I opted for the 9600gt as the video card. Thanks, again!
