You'd think that nVidia would move above GDDR3 by now , but no .

Maybe they will when GDDR5 HD 4870s flood the market and people start saying, "Hey, this number is two higher than yours..."

I think maybe if it shows a significant improvement over the GDDR3 then they would use it. You can tell its fast by its rated speed we just need to know if real world applications would benefit. I think the shortage of GDDR5 is also the reason for a delay in cards from ATI aswell.I believe if ATI did not have a shortage they should have come out with there cards in May not June. Nvidia would have definately had a shortage as well knowing that there GTX 280 is gonna have 1 GB of GDDR3 and GTX 260 almost 900 MB of GDDR3. So having GDDR5 would have delayed the Nvidia cards quite a bit seeing at how much memory they are gonna use.

They don't need to. Why is everyone always so obsessed with having a higher number at the end of 'GDDR'...
The card has a 512bit memory bus...they'll have more bandwidth than they know what to do with. And without paying extra for GDDR5.

Uhm... higher GDDR version = better energy efficiency as far as I can remember ?
But a bit more expense, so...

What I am really concerned about with the new cards is how long we will have to wait for aftermarket coolers to come out. I hear there should be some solid overclocking headroom, but it will have to be hot at ~240 watts.
Also, why are 8-pin power supplies so expensive? My power can currently handle two overclocked 8800 GTS 320's, with the processor overclocked and overclocked memory as well, but it only has 6-pin 12v rails. Argh!

Probably, only because they're typically on a newer process. I don't think the power used by the memory is of much concern though, considering the GPU is going to have like 1.4 billion transistors.
GDDR5 is faster, but it's more expensive, and much harder to come by. ATi is probably going to have supply problems because of it.

Oh , right .
I wonder what'll the temperatures on the GTX 280 be like .
I edited this so I wouldn't make a double post .

Damn... oh well , Crysis at 1920x1200 with 2xAA is still good enough though .

Well I guess its still better then having to use 2 8800 GTX to get 1920x1200 at 2xAA. So one of these should actually be quite good. I just wonder what FPS they were getting at those settings. They also forget to mention whether it is on High or Very High Detail I am assuming. So I am guessing with 2 of these cards you should be doing really pretty good in Crysis.

I'm guessing they are talking about 1920x1200 , 2xAA and very high settings . As I recall they mentioned 2560x1600 on two of these cards .

I always find it somewhat irritating that Crysis is constantly used as the test game. Its obviously not optimized very well because SLI and CF scaling on it is terrible compared to any other modern game. Yes the graphics are good, but Crysis is a performance anomaly.
It's acting like the exception is the rule, instead of the other way around. *Note* Happens in politics too *Note*

Well the new cards will most likely run all other games at the highest possible settings at an uber high framerate , so theres nothing else to test the cards with , aside from Crysis , I suppose ...
That's until Alan Wake and Far Cry 2 get released , though .

That is true. There are some other tough ones to run as well, like Supreme Commander and a few of the other RTS's when turned to maximum.

Indeed so... but from what I've noticed ( correct me , if I'm mistaken ) they are included in most reviews aswell . Then again , they aren't nearly as popular as Crysis . RTS games require a lot of thinking , while FPS games just require you to aim , shoot , run :P .

ya, in RTS gaes you must have damn hell lots of patience, and the starting part is always dead boring, the only part which is nice is where you send all your huge army and attack. FPS games only require skills and a good mouse, no thinking required.

Looks like someone got a little carried away ...
I generally enjoy good RTS games even more than I do FPS games ... but then again I love FPS games .

The cards are savage. They will destroy everything at 1920x1200, and destroy almost everything at 2500x1600. Pricey though.
I was pleased by the overclocking results too, the overclock directly translates to performance increase where it was a lot fuzzier with the previous cards.

Is it worth it to upgrade to GTX 280? I'm not going to, but I was wondering if anyone was.

Wait a week or two for the Radeon HD4800 series and we'll see.

Yeah I would definately wait the release of the ATI cards is coming up shortly and they are supposed to be pretty powerful. I like the fact that they are sending the cards out around the same time. It allows for better comparison versus comparing cards from different sides where one could be a year or so old. I kinda wanna see what prices come about from the cards being released. :D

The GTX280 is not worth it's cost... and it's only useful when you use it on super high resolutions with a riddiculous amount of AA .

Oh YEah I know thats whats awesome. I like to have high res and lots of AA.
