Sorry for all the n00b'ishness but...

I've got an asus p4p800e atx mobo that supports an agp card. Installed is a VisionTek x1600xt card that has been working fine for about a year. That card supports two DVI LCD monitors. One is a pro series viewsonic (vp201b high resolution) the other is a lesser resolution (vs912f).

A few days ago I started having problems with either the card or the high resolution monitor (vp201b). In vga mode both monitors work as expected but as soon as I load the drivers and catalyst software the vp201b stops working, but the lesser resolution monitor still functions.

So my concern is how do I check where the problem is? Is it the monitor or the video card? I'm leaning towards the video card but I don't know of anyway to tell what's wrong at this point and testing the monitor without another machine is very difficult.

Anyone have any ideas how to test if the video card is failing or the monitor is failing?

One symptom I notice now that wasn't there ever is when I boot XP right after the "Windows" screen just before it drops into the login page I get a bunch of flickering like the VPU is trying to start or the memory is refreshing happens on both monitors at the same time. Once the machine wouldn't boot said the VPU wasn't plugged into the power connector which it was. I dunno just weird problems all of a sudden and I'm hoping to narrow down my problem before buying yet another vid card for that machine or another expensive monitor.

Thanks for listening to my drama.

You can switch the outputs that the monitors are plugged into to figure out if it's the monitor pretty easily.

If that's not it then...

Did you do anything new to it just before it started acting up? If not it's most likely that your card just kicked it. Try swapping it out for another.

"as soon as I load the drivers and catalyst software the vp201b stops working, but the lesser resolution monitor still functions."

Could you clarify what you mean by "as soon as I load the drivers?" Did you install new drivers? Or do you mean as soon as windows loads?

Might be your video card crapping out ( considering the VPU recover ) , but as -RK said , what do you mean by as soon as you load them ?

Check to see if the display got disabled in the display manager in Catalyst.

Just hit detect displays and if something is hooked up it will find it. Also once it comes up you have to right click the icon, in the "Displays currrently disabled" box and enable it.

Don't know if this helps. Didn't read any other posts except the first one. but try this.
