I was wondering if this is a good option for a new videocard in the new rig I'm building. I'm leaning towards this because of the price, and the fact that a simple BIOS flash and a little OCing will make this equal to an XT PE...but is there a better choice for the money?

Specs of the rig on request (current or future).

You're looking at ~200 then? If so, the 6800 GS is another card woth looking at in your price range. If you plan on flashing etc. the X800GTO2 would edge it out after the flash. Either of those cards are a great deal.

I agree...except that I think the GTO2 is going for a little more than $200 these days. I'm leaning towards the GS since it has PS3.0 PureVideo HDR etc...however, if you just want raw speed in the games you play and aren't afraid of a little BIOS flashing the GTO2 will likely give you more performance in most games.

That's exactly what I was going to say...except I checked the egg and GTO2 prices have gone down a little, to around $190. I was surprised, I guess they snuck back down after the initial rush to get them when they first came out. So it comes to the slight speed advantage of the gto2 vs. the slight feature advantage of the gs.

Hmmm...I think i'll go for the GTO2, as a little bios flash doesn't frighten me :p, and I spend more time than I should playing games.

Either way, it's a big step up from my Radeon 7000.

Cmon..it's got mojo!

The non-VIVO GTO2 will still unlock, right? People are telling me that only the VIVO unlocks..

mmm, I honestly don't know about that one. I would assume that they would unlock as long as they're the still on the same core, no?

That's what I figured, they should all be the R480 core. The reviews say they unlocked it fine, so I'm just going non-VIVO to save some cash.

Now all I have to do is find a cheap-yet-decent monitor...should be fun.

Ever get your card there? I was curious just to confirm that they all unlock.

I got the X800GTO2, and it unlocked fine. Overclocked quite well too, it's running a little above X850XTPE speeds no problem (ATITool reports no artifacts after 4 hours of testing). I'm not pushing it at the moment, as I have an Arctic Silencer on the way...then we'll see how far i can get.

Right now they're about 36-39C idle and about 49-53C load (depending on ambiemt temps, which vary a lot in this house).

It should be here before the week is out, if everything goes well. Found one for 10 + shipping :D .

EDIT: When I tested it for an extended period of time with ATITool, it maxed at 60C.

Currently running at 586 core, 640 mem. Loads at ~55C (ATITool artifact testing/Oblivion/Benching). Not too bad IMO.

Stock = 400 core, 490 mem.

It's a Sapphire, like the title says. I'm not sure if it's faster than the GS...I'm not really up on nVidia cards, but I think it might be.

Damn, had I known I would have sold you my 19" LCD for cheap. Now that I have my 24" widescreen Dell, I didn't need it. I already sold it to a neighbor though.

Oh well.

I got zero IMs / PMs from you asking me about a place to get a good monitor.

Your fault. :p

I did ask you, and you told me to go Dell.

But I still asked.

No, you don't understand - you have to ask me AFTER I decide to get a new monitor, not before. You can't expect me to remember our conversations - I have too much crap going on as it is!

... silly Colonel ...
