I need a PCI-E video card for my new rig. I was going to go with a 512 MB ATI 2600 Pro but I have seen the light after reading several bad reviews about it and the 2600 XT. I am not sure what AMD is doing but it is bad currently.

So I will go with a 512 MB nVidia. I am on a budget and the limit is $150. That being said, I was looking at this 8600 GTS...

It sounds pretty good feature-wise.

I then saw this 8600 GT...

It is a really great deal after the mail-in rebate.

Now the spin part...

If I understand the above website correctly, you simply move the sliders for the Core Clock and Memory Clock to figure out what you are getting. If that is the case...

get the Radeon HD2600XT, it has very very powerful shader horsepower

And yet it is a bit slower than the 8600 GT .

Don't look at the HD 2600/8600 cards... they weren't good to begin with...
Do yourself a favour and get the HD 3850... it's cheap and it kills the HD 2600's and 8600's .. and it also has all the fancy video playback features you'll ever need :P .

I second exactly what radiator said! If you can definately get the HD 3850 your performance will be way better then the 8600/2600 do yourself a favor and get the 3850.

$20 more will do the trick. The 3850 is a superb card.

If $20 is out of reach, then I'd say to go with the x1950XT or pro cards.

No it's not right you got the specs of the cards all wrong when they put the memory clock to 1600Mhz and 2000Mhz they rly mean 1600Mhz and 2000Mhz
just fyi :) its all about marketing would u buy a card that said 1000 Mhz mem clock or 2000 Mhz mem clock on the box

From the two Egg links it appears you are looking at silent coolers (no fan) correct?
In the "budget gamer price point" (<$100) silent cards are a tough call, although the 8600GTS are consider the main player in that range. Change the fan plug to 5V on this and they're found to still run fairly cool at load, while making it more than tolerable noise wise…

While it sounds like you may be mulling over the lower-end of “mid-level offerings” ($120-150), I’ve yet to warm up to the 8800GS. Not many indicate good things to over clocking the reference designs and the cooler are said to plain be noisy.
While 3850, which come up a little short performance wise and most often pricier against the 9600GT; here’s a HIS 3550 512Mb with a nice quiet Artic Cooler (2-slot)

While 9600GT silent’s are pricey… and two also two slot.
