i have a 2900xt and after seeing the 3870x2 i am very interested in it. i would just like to hear peoples views on this card and if it would be worth upgrading or just waiting.
thanks

Well , it's faster than your card and drains about 10W more power :P ... but there wont be a huge advantage unless you game at VERY high resolutions .

It is the most powerful card out now which is good. But like radiator mentioned it works better at high resolutions. After a few driver updates it should be pretty good.
Better than 8800 ultra for a lower cost...
The thing is a beast.

I wonder what will nvidia do to answer for this monster card.....
look up the geforce 9800GX2 plans.
Looks like a pair of G92 type cores...

So each card will be basically like 2 8800 GT. I don't know if it will be the same as 2 in SLI but we will see. This card will probably retake the crown for Nvidia. If not probably the 9800 GTX. All we can do is wait.
I thought that the hd3870x2 was a monster, but man that thing looks rediculous...

The 9800 GX2 has two PCBs.. and for that already I wouldn't buy it .

I'm not so sure about HD 3870X2 ... There's just something about it that seems "too" good. In Australia it starts at $600 and goes up to $800 or so. I mean, do we have any conclusive evidence to say the drivers are stable? I know [H] OCP had to use an older driver because the latest wasn't, that kind of thing worries me.

The thing is, nVidia doesnt have to "retake" the crown at all. I suggest reading the [H]ard OCP article about the 3870X2. It's faster in timedemos and canned benchmarks, but it is slower than a 8800 GTX in almost every real-gameplay situation and therefore is definitely lower than an Ultra. So essentially, the new 8800 GTS is already faster than a 3870X2 since a new GTS is faster than a GTX, and more or less tied with the Ultra depending on your settings preference.
I think you and [H]ard OCP are full of it.
No offense, just an old driver.

The HD 3870 X2 IS the fastest card in the market .. the 9800 GX2 is prettymuch equal , though . But it's not released and it's slightly slower ... and most likely will have a larger pricetag on it ... large pricetags are nVidia's bloody specialty -.- . Like the X1900 XTX was around 450 USD while the 7900 GTX was 600 USD + if I remember correct , while they were the most powerful cards on the market ( correct me , if I am mistaken ) .
yup.
Then the x1950XTX and 7950gx2 came out and that changed. A little bit.

The X1900 XTX killed the GTX , though ... and I remember reading some reviews where the X1950 XTX actually beat the 7950 GX2 in a number of games ( and both of the GPUs were in use ) . But then again , they were very shader-heavy games ( for that time ) .
The XTX was a MONSTER GPU. It still kicks so much ass for how old it is. Major points to anyone who still has one.
The GX2 still beat it in almost all games and ended up a little cheaper than the earlier 7900gtx/x1950xtx in some cases so NV did have the crown for that.
I wasn't aware that there was a 7950gtx for the XTX to compete against. Are you sure?

There was no 7950 GTX , only a GX2 . I never said there was .

i rememeber i read that nvidia's last models such as the 7950's were released because they could not keep up with the ati's 1900 series.
the 6 series didnt have a 50 ending in them, it ended pretty much at 6800's.

Yep ... the X1900's were monsters .
ahhh... the 7950gtx was a notebook chip.
The thing did exist...

The 7950 GTX notebook one prettymuch was a 7900 GTX if I recall correct .
Nope, It's about equivilent to a 7950GT. The 7900GTX outdoes it by a lot.
It was impressive that they could get that into a notebook though.

I wrote that a while ago , after reading the first review :P ... the 9800 GX2 is a bit faster , but I wouldn't pay 150 or 160 USD more for 210 FPS instead of 200 FPS .

The 9800 GX2 is significantly faster, but yeah it really isnt worth the increase in cash dollars. Its usually just better to go with a single card solution. I made the SLI mistake (instead of a better single) and im regretting it now.
Like you said its essentially pointless as your games will look great either way ;)

Yep... it's not worth the extra cash , but it's not THAT much faster .
If it was , it would be worth the money :P .
