Hi All,
First, I used the site search engine, and came up blank. ;) I request your opinions. My goal is to build a new gaming pc. I don't have a lot of money. The new pc will be used almost exclusively for air-combat simulations. I primarily fly the WW2 air combat sim "IL-2", and a jet sim called LOMAC (LockOn Modern Air Comabt). These types of sims are both cpu and video intensive, and perfrom best with 2 gigs of ram. My current rig can handle these sims, but I have to turn down a few of the more demanding settings. The new rig must be able to handle up-coming sims while also having to turn a few of the more demading settings. Som new sims in the pipeline will make use of quad core cpus.

I am looking at the next generation cpu from Intel, the Penryn. I am thinking of going with a quad processor so as to give the system as much longevity as possible. But maybe a quad Conroe will do? The motherboard will probably be the P-35 series of mobos. Only mild, air-cooled overclocking is in the plans. Only using a single gpu
OK so here's my current main components:
Intel P4 2.8 hyperthreading w/800mhz fsb
1.5gig Kingston HyperX PC3500/434 fsb
BFG 6800 Ultra OC
Gigabyte PE865 mobo w/8x agp.

I hope I made sense! :D I don't do any other type of simming, so I can't speak to them, except to say that I'm aware of such sims as Crysis, COD series, Battlefield series, and similar combat sims. I'm just an airhead, or rotor head trying to make good in the virtual skies asking for a little help.
thanks!

A 8800 GT is cheap and performs quite nicely...same for the HD 3870 .
The rest , you've prettymuch figured out yourself , it seems :P .
As for the CPU , a quad core Conroe will do... Penryn is good , but... it doesn't matter by that much .

Hi Radiator,
thanks for replying to my two posts. I plan to review again the relative performance differences between Conroes and Penryns. At one point I thought I had one processor in mind, but I think I need to wait for the lower Penryn quads and duals to be released before I make a decision. The stuff I play sure can use at least dual cores so the system processes have their own core (at least I hope it works that way), and leaves one for the sim. Some newer sims coming out indicate that they may code for dual and quad cores. To me that means chasing the next bottleneck. I hope fill rates on video cards can handle what multi cores can put out.
regards!
