View Full Version : High ping due to new video card?

I recently purchased a Sapphire ATI Radeon X1650 Pro (512). After installing the card, updating the drivers and all that fun stuff, I opened up Battlefield 2 to play some, and went into my community's server. It wasn't "live" (less than 8 people were on) and I jumped in a jet, started flying around, and then I began to lag. Attempted the same thing on a few other servers, with the same result.

My ping would jump every 30 seconds or so, to about 500+. I would also like to note that I did not have this problem before I upgraded to the X1650, when I was using an integrated card.

I gave up playing for awhile, and played SP games. I've since upgraded to 2 gigs of RAM, and tried to play Battlefield 2, this didn't fix the problem.

So, I gave up again.

Yesterday, I decided to try and play the game on my moms computer, which is running a Nvidia 7600GT (we both have 2 gigs of RAM, I have a 2.19 Ghz processor, while she has a 1.77 Ghz processor). No lag whatsoever. I thought it might be the port in our router, so I switched our ports, and same thing happened on my computer, while hers still ran fine. (Testing on the same BF2 server).

I decided to try a new NIC card (the one I had been using was integrated into the motherboard). The same thing continued to happen.

Is it possible for the Video card to be causing this lag?

Have you tried puting your old card back it to test if it is indeed the new card causing the lag?? But i really dont think a video card can cause internet lag they can give you low frames per second however. Which seems to be the problem cause you say you lag in single
player.
What card are you upgrading from??
Try reinstaling BF2 some games work better when u reinstall them afther you change video cards

Your video card doesn't affect ping .
I'd blame crappy net OR the net wire that is connected to the PC is loose ( did you check that ). Eric - he said that he was using an integrated card before .

I had to format about 2 weeks after getting the card, this was not because of the card though, so the game has been reinstalled.

Low FPS is not my problem, I get anywhere between 40-80 FPS.
My Ethernet cable is ok as well. Well, at least with being plugged in all the way.
And yeah, I was using an integrated card before.

I got an idea Bring your tower next to your moms tower and plug it there using the same ethernet cable she uses if it works with this 1 it will mean that your other cable is faulty or not pluged in corectly

Alright. It's fixed.

Extremely strange though. I did a test with my integrated, and I didn't ping at all. So I switched back to the card, and it said my drivers were corrupted/missing/not initializing, so I re-D/L'd it, installed, opened up the game, and it worked great. Ping stayed around 50-70 on my Community's server, and 20-40 on some random server I joined (which was nearly full).

This whole ordeal has been extremely frustrating, but I'm glad it's finally working. Hopefully it continues to work, and doesn't die again in the next few days.

Thank you all for your input! It was very much appreciated.

ATI must have had a corrupt driver or something, that's the only thing I can think of.
EDIT: Okay, it seems it's not completely solved. I'm still getting some ping issues whenever I fly, or do stuff when a lot of data gets sent to the server, and back to me.

Everybody else doesnt' seem to get this, so I'm not sure what the problem is...
