I have the Asus A8N SLI-Deluxe and I'm looking at getting an Athlon 64 x2 6000+ but I'm not sure if it will work in my motherboard. I did a little searching but didn't find anything conclusive. Anyone have any ideas or know off hand?

Thanks in advance.

I'd say it's time for a motherboard upgrade...:) (go intel!)

(it only supports up to 4800+)

Nope. The Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe is a Socket 939 motherboard. The AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ is only available in Socket AM2.

gah! See, I don't really want to go through all that right now. I have my raids and data drives set up like I like them and I really don't want to go through all that crap right now. Do you think upgrading to the 4800+ will be enough of an upgrade to even notice?

... yeah, if I would have spent a little more time (and been a little more awake to put forth the effort) last night I would have figured that out. I'm so ashamed of how out of touch with PC hardware I am now. I used to be up on everything but alas, priorities change as you get older.

I had a 3500+ in the same motherboard as you (socket 939) with 2gb hyperx$$$ ram, and changing to intel or higher than 4800x2 (higher means go to am2) would have made me change to ddr2 and waste a good mobo and good ram. I decided to buy 4800x2 because i think it is a good enough processor to run games for a good time only upgrading the 3dcard. I donīt think that soon i īll find a bottleneck from gpu-cpu , specially when the upcoming directx10 is supposed to be less dependant to the cpu that dx9. If I had to make the same choice now, i would go for 4600x2 instead, because it is much more cheaper, easier to find, and itīs lower cache gives you the same gaming performance as the 4800x2 (1mb L2 cache). Buying 4600x2, I would wait for a complete upgrade saving the money from the new (am2/intel) mobo and ddr2 ram to spend it in a really good Card.

By the way of performance, in single applications like word or nero, obviously not much difference. In oblivion (the worst optimized game ever), with an x850pro, 4fps average increase. But I it is really necessary to install the amd dual core game patch. Games like warcraft3 went crazy many times.

I was in the same situation at the beginning of this year. I purchased an AMD XP 3500+ 2 years ago right when the socket 939 first came out. I thought to myself, well in a few years just pop in a new socket 939 cpu and I will have an easy upgrade.
AMD dropped the 939 in favor of the AM2 and the 4800+ is almost vaporware and way overpriced due to everyone with a socket 939 trying to upgrade. I bit the bullet and built a whole new PC over and went with the Intel C2D and I have never been happier. The performance difference between a 3500+ and a E6600 is huge and I don't regret my purchase.
I'm hoping that Intel will stick with the socket 775 for awhile, but not holding my breath.

I decided to go with the "last hurrah" for my 939 board: an opteron 180 which will be arriving today. The 4800+ was, as you said, pretty much impossible to find so I decided the 180 was a better alternative. :)

Thanks for the assistance.
