View Full Version : Take my 7900GT, Please!

So I built a new system a while back, and one of my key concerns was noise. I bought all silent components including a Gigabyte 7900GT
(GV-NX79T256DP-RH) with a zalman fan on it. It's factory overclocked to 525MHz core and 720MHz memory.

My only problem with the card is the fan spins up to full speed while running windows vista and I have no way whatsoever to turn the damn thing down. Even at full speed it's quite tolerable, I'm just annoyed that my perfectly silent pc is being ruined by this silly fan.

If anyone is interested in buying the card off of me, I'd be willing to let it go for somewhere around $200 which would include shipping (it's currently on Newegg for $250 + shipping). I've only been using the card for a couple of months, and I'd ship it in the original packaging with all the original parts including a copy of Quake4 and PowerDVD.

How abt just replacing the fan? Zalman VF900 lets u choose the fan speed.

I don't wanna void the warranty...I'm not a big fan of modding video cards

If I could just get the fanless one, that'd be preferable, but thanks for pointing that out, if I don't sell it I'll grab one of those fans...

It's just a shame, cuz the card comes with a nice fan already, I just can't control the speed of the damn thing...

If doubt taking a fan off voids the warranty, inlight of there being so many manufacturers for aftermarket coolers.

You're the last person i thought would care abt a stock fan, as it is usually what noobs cry abt - those who dont know that aftermarket coolers exsist.

Not to mention aftermarket coolers are by FAR better at cooling and more quite. Your card will last a lot longer with an aftermarket fan, and u need one if u want to overclock.

Replacing the factory fan absolutely 100% voids the warranty...and that's why I bought the card with a Zalman fan to begin with, ya know? why void my warranty if I don't have to?

Again, i have to stress how much that makes no sense (not saying its wrong though), since that is the ONLY income of companies like Zalman who make nice earnings. You may be more careful of the warranty than most (including me, who has never bought a GPU in his life), but u cant be much more.

It makes perfect sense. Modifying a video card absolutely voids the warranty...whether or not you know that or not is of no consequence. The point stands, given the option of paying $40 for an aftermarket fan and voiding my warranty, or paying a little more and getting a card that comes with a Zalman fan from the factory...I opted for the latter.

And now, given the option of voiding my warrantly and spending more money on a different fan, I'd rather just get a different card without a fan.

If you think it doesn't make sense, then why don't you go to Gigabyte's website and read their warranty. Like every video card manufacturers, they won't accept cards that have been modified. Now you can always put the factory heatsink back on and lie, but why bother when I can just get another card that does what I want?

Alright, I read what they have to say..

This is a very strange issue. First off I cant live without an aftermarket cooler, and so them forbiding it (even though warranty dosent matter if I buy it in the US so w/e) is quite wierd. But then its mostly wierd because everyone still buys aftermarket coolers, as only the noobs who dont even know abt their exsistence opt for "already mounted" aftermarket coolers.

Seems like if this is so important to u, u should have bought a card with an aftermarket cooler to begin with. Because without that cooler u wont be able to get that 15-30% overclock and 100%+ noise reduction that is immpossible to live without.

Oh, and btw, why did u buy the 7900 GT Now?

"...as only the noobs who don't even know about their existence opt for 'already mounted' aftermarket coolers."

So you're calling me a noob?

As usual Track, you think you know everything, but in fact you know very little. If I were you, I would be very careful with the usage of the word 'noob', because clearly, when it comes to video cards, I know a whole hell of a lot more than you do...so if I'm doing something, and you think it's "noobish", then maybe you should rethink your definition of "noobish".

This may come as a shock to you, but not everyone in the world is in a huge rush to strap an after-market cooler to their video card and overclock the hell out of it. In fact, only a very small minority of users bother with such things, because most times all it does is cause problems.

I've been well aware of after-market cooling solutions for video cards for quite some time...I didn't buy one because these days I spend more time actually working with my computer and less time trying to modify it. Because these days, if my computer breaks, it doesn't just stop me from playing video games, it stops me from doing my job.

Please Mike, u know the admiration I have towards u *praise Mike*.
The word noob just comes naturally to me (dark past), and I used it only because i never thought ud think i was talking abt u.
A PC hardware noob is a person who does not know abt aftermarket coolers (as ive mentioned), and u clearly do.. And i used the work noob before, why attack me now? :(

PC hardware is just a hobby for me, as long as I dont actually study it (might soon though - army), i will never ammount to u.. nor do i want to. A person's got to have an idol.

Seriously! When did u get the impression that I think i know everything?
The only thing ive done with my knowledge is try to help ppl and learn from my mistakes so that i can know even more. Unlike some ppl I know, like my PSU guy (ur my GPU guy, btw), who would prefer to answer questions via a thread and thus dont learn anything new, since u learn more by answering questions, I always take everyone's questions and do my best to answer them, but if i dont know i refer them to THG forumz.

So seriously, why attack like this and get so mad over a single word wich wasnt even meant for u? How could i call YOU a noob??? You tought me everything i know abt graphics card, and ur the SOLE reason im in the field of PC hardware, wich i wouldnt be able to live without!!!

And abt the aftermarket coolers.. I just cant see Zalman staying afloat, when u say that such a small minority buys from them. This is an interesting issue.. may have to ask THG for that as they are extremely kind (as long as ur asking the questions).

Zalman stays afloat by selling a hell of a lot more than just gpu coolers (i.e. cpu coolers). And by getting deals with half a dozen major video card manufacturers to make their heatsinks for them.

And I'm not attacking you, I'm just pointing out how you like to argue with me constantly without ever stopping to see things from anyone else's perspective.

Hi there.

I just signed up for this forum, it looks like a good one, but yor 7900GT really caught my eye, as I am trying to aquire one.

I have a brand new X1900 All In Wonder video card that has been in my computer for just a month or so, with all the cables, software, instructions, box, etc included.

I was wondering if you would like to organize a trade. This card would be great for an HTPC, and is usually about 3FPS lower than the 7900GT in most benchmarks, so it would be a fair trade.

Hope to hear back from you,
Dex

Nah, I don't live in Israel. I am in the USA.

I am looking to do a trade, because I probably couldn't sell this for more than 220, and I can't get a better card than this for less than that.

I am really just looking to break even on this one.

But let me know,
Dex

Yeh, i was just kidding.

Why do u want to sell the X1900? Its the best card on earth u know.

Because I hate ATI. Their drivers suck.

And honestly, I do like the graphical performance of the card, but the TV tuner software is TERRIBLE, and there is no 3rd party available.

I think I will just keep it, put aftermarket cooling on it, and then overclock it.
