does anybody know which one is better ati hd4870 x2 or ati hd6870?

pure power 4870 x2

but that is because it has 2 GPUs versus only 1 for the 6870.

the smarter buy...well that depends on what you already have as a system.

A 6870 is better. The 4870x2 might have been better than a 5850 but the 6870 is easily a better choice. It overclocks easier and stays cooler than the dual GPU from two generations ago. The minimum framerates are what matter in games, and the 4870x2, I remember, was severely lacking in that aspect. I owned one after I sold my 295, which wasn't wise to be entirely honest, and I remember it would get stupid hot at times and got really crappy FPS in games. Drivers at the time, and even now, for dual GPU cards were and are atrocious and horrid.

The 6870 is a monster for the price it's set at. :D

i would go with 6870 as well

it just handles dx11 way better than the 5000 or 4000 series
