has more kick in it than a 480

however at its current price point...you could buy 2 5870's or a 5970
for more performance or even 2 470 gtx's

here is a review with the 470 in sli, 5870's crossfire, and 5970
http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/30999-nvidia-geforce-gtx-470-sli-review.html

you can directly compare the results to the review of the 580 from hardware canucks as well

it is a great single card, yes. can you SLI it later, yes of course
all depends what you want now :)

which is why you never buy a new card (like a new car model) when they first come out.
let the rich and/or the idiots pay for the engineering costs whilst the rest of us reap a better cost/performance ratio.

And all the reviews I have read paint a pretty clear picture that overall even though the shader count is higher there is not as much difference between the GTX480 and 580, compared to say the 470-480, the biggest thing they have done is helped temps somewhat say 8C during dual card use, the temps, and the noise, not much of a jump really, wit for AMD to release it`s "refresh" 6900
