Device ID in ROM on 64 MB ATI Radeon 7000

Recently purchased an ATI 64 MB Radeon 7000 clone (PC version). I have a cookbook procedure for re-flashing the onboard EEPROM for compatibility with my Mac G3. But the "Flashrom.rom" text file in the software contains only references to device ID "5159" (hex). Unfortunately "Apple System Profiler" in my G3 says the device ID of my card is "4C59." Research indicates that ID is for an ATI Radeon Mobility M6. If I put the card in a PC as instructed and boot in DOS, and then run the info command, I get the error message "ATI Adapter Not Found."

Is this because there is no reference to a "4C59" in the re-flash text file on the floppy disc? What is "4C59" doing in a flashROM for a Radeon 7000 anyway?

I returned the card, but have not yet received a replacement.

Any comments from the GPU experts? Thanks!

The Original 64 MB ATI Radeon 7000 PCI card uses an RV100 GPU chip, and a STMicroelectronics M25P10-AV EEPROM. The marking on the EEPROM on the clone card I had was "25P10VP." I'm pretty sure the marking (limited by the size of the EEPROM SO-8 package) shows it is the correct EEPROM type, but am not positive. I'm wondering if the clone is functionally different from the OEM ATI card, although it carries a sticker saying "CLATI7000."

Any wisdom as to whether clones of the ATI Radeon are somehow not flashable to Mac compatibility as opposed to OEM ATI cards?

And yes, I'm aware of the dated technology. It turns out that the best graphics card for my "gift" beige desktop PowerMac G3 is the Radeon 7000. My regular G5 runs almost all my old games, but one or two won't play well under Classic, and need a system that boots into OS 9. So I need this "ancient" upgrade. At the moment the OEM graphics are ATI Rage II with 6 MB buffer.

Thanks much for your help. I had previously read those two links, and in fact that process described is what I was attempting. The problem was the "ATI Adapter Not Found" error message I got from DOS, after putting in the command "flashrom -i." That command should have returned a table identifying the card's "adapter number." I am thinking that perhaps the device ID "4c59" stored on the card (in the EEPROM) faked out the process. I have printed out the text file "FLASHROM.ROM" on the boot floppy disc. It carries a list of device types, and the correct one for the Radeon 7000 "5159" (hex) is there, but nothing for the "4c59." If the flashing software "FLASHROM.EXE" on the floppy disc is looking for the device IDs in the text file, obviously it won't find the 4c59 there. That might abort the process.

If the new replacement card also has a device ID of "4c59," I may try adding it to the FLASHROM.ROM text file and seeing if that works. If my G3 states it is a "5159," I'll be using the original file.
