Hi guys,

I know that the concept of multicore GPUs isnt really practical, because GPUs have already gotten far more parallel, they have a lot of pixel pipelines.

But have a look at this article about the XBOX 360 GPU ( i know it is outdated but i just noticed it when i was doing some reading about Xenos)
http://interviews.teamxbox.com/xbox/1458/The-Power-of-the-Xbox-360-GPU/p4/

now look at the end of the web page, here's what is written

"Finally, where do you think real-time graphics are heading in the next few years? Will GPU accelerate physics or a separated processor (a PPU, as AGEIA calls it) be required? Will future GPUs go multicore in a single die like CPUs are doing, or will Crossfire/SLI-like implementations be the solution to increased performance?

Bob Feldstein: The future of graphics could well include multicore GPUs, although we are looking at many alternatives to enable GPUs to live in the necessary cost and power envelopes."

So that what does this mean, Bob siad that the future could include multicore GPUs?

what do u guys think about this, if u do believe it will happen, when do u think this will be out?

multi-core gpus isn't unlikely, it just plain doesn't make sense.

the term multi-core simply doesn't apply to gpu's since gpu's are massively parallel by nature...

the only 'multi-core' possibility that makes sense is the idea of fusing a video processor, a physics processor, and perhaps a sound processor together on the same die...but that's way way way down the road, like maybe in 5-10 years...

think of it this way, a dual-core pentium 4 has 2 pipelines...an x1900xtx has 48...if you took 2 x1900xtx cores and stuck them together, you'd just have a 96 pipelines gpu...it wouldn't be 'dual-core', it would just be more of the same parallelization that already exists...

compare this to cpus which were single core from their invention up until dual core came out in the last year or so...gpus have been processing data in parallel since the Voodoo2 first got a second texture unit...
