Hi I would like to buy this configuration:

Dell
StudioXPS 8100 - Processeur Intel Core i7 860 (2,8 GHz, 8 Mo)
Raid 0 « Stripe » de 2 To (2 x 1 To) à 7 200 tr/min
DDR3 bicanale de 8 192 Mo (4 x 2 Go) à 1 333 MHz
My question is which videocard is better:

-NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 260 1,8 Gb
or
-ATI Radeon™ HD 5770 1 Gb

I would like to play GTA4, Total War Empire and Napoleon (release in march 2010).

Regards :D

first question, is it the 216 core card ?

if not
then the 5770 will perform faster

if it is then this will apply

they both perform about the same
the gtx 260 216 core usually does a bit better in games
(some it does worse in, but again not by much)

well each card has pros and cons

gtx 260
pro's
can do phys-x for games that support it

note : the games you want to play..don't use it

con's
if any game can use dx11 or dx10.1 (not 100% on the 10.1) then the gtx won't use it. it'll just default to the
dx10 commands, which is fine.

5770
pro's
can do dx11 and 10.1

con's
can't do phys-x
:)

the gtx uses more power than the 5770
but again will only matter if you're playing for like
hours and hours and HOURS over the year

There is almost no difference between the two with regards to performance; get whichever one is cheaper.

Edit: With the games you mentioned, you should consider buying a 250 (http://www.gpureview.com/GeForce-GTS-250-card-606.html)--unless you want to use high levels of AA/AF, or high res (whatever x 1080+), or any other eye-candy.

Here's a review from the other day of a PowerColor 5770 OC that was $135 -AR $20. At 1920x1200 it's was 1% better than the GTX260. Then don't disregard the power savings if you are one to leave the computer on all the time! Then what can you get a GTX260 for today? The three Eggs' listing are all something north of $180...
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/HD_5770_PCS_Plus/1.html

The big bummer is that if you went with the lastest Nvidia 196.21 WHQL driver update you no longer can overclock your Nvidia cards with almost anyones OC panel.
Typical... Nvidia Driver issues!

They're more or less equivalent, each has it's minor pros and cons which are mentioned earlier. Go with whatever is cheaper.

P.S don't bother with the 1.8 GB GTX260 if you're going for the GTX260 ( which I would advise against ) , the extra memory is just useless on it .

Ah, sure but when? Since say end of November... Core 216 haven't been $130 that I've noticed.

Not quite, if you're at some insane resolution then a bit more can be used by the card, not 1792mb, but a bit more. I'd definitely recommend the 5770 at a normal resolution though.

Yeah well I highly doubt he'll be gaming with three 24" fullHD monitors lol .
At any single monitor resolution that amount is 100% useless .

yose, the point is that that price for a GTX260 is rare. It's currently pretty unlikely that you would find a GTX260 for cheaper than a 5770.

The more I think about it the more I realize that I'd really have to say the 5770 is the way to go. It's smaller, uses less power, generates less heat, and (usually) it'll be cheaper.

Yeah, lucky like those guys who got XFX 4890 for $158 in August '09 but does help his shanoto today... DOH!

shanoto -- the one question nobody asked is what PSU does that StudioXPS 8100 come with and/or will it power either choice?
There's not any card deal today that would come close to that PowerColor 5770 OC that was down to $130 and taday it's 145! Sure it's only 512Mb, though as said unless rolling with a 2560x1600 panel (which if you are move the the 5850 or wait for is said to soon be a 4830) you probably won't see a huge differance.
