Nvidia Geforce GTS 250 Vs. Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT

whats up everyone? I was wondering I could possibly get some help I'd appreciate it. I currently have an Nvidia Geforce GTS 250 and it's a pretty good card. The only thing is I'm trying to hook up my PC to my TV and it's not letting me get any audio through my TV. Turns out this card doesn't have an HDMI out port but 9800 GT does. I was just wondering if I exchanged the GTS 250 for the 9800 GT would I notice a huge difference in performance? The 9800 GT is slightly cheaper than the GTS 250 but that's not my main concern I just wanted a card where I can hook it up and hear audio and video on my TV. The video is fine just the audio is all static to the point where you can't hear anything. I tried everything to make audio work. I have the SPDIF cable hooked up correctly on my motherboard, they sent me a new video card which didn't help and at one point they said it may even be my TV so I returned it and got a new one, still didn't work. Any help would be appreciated!

The 9800GT is a good bit less powerful than the GTS250, but your card should support HDMI audio via dvi anyway. Try using the DVI>HDMI adapter if you haven't already. Nvidia cards actually don't have the greatest hdmi support. If I remember correctly, with any nvidia card you'll need to use the spdif cable inside your case to connect to the card to get audio through DVI OR HDMI. Nvidia didn't include a sound chip on their cards, so it's gotta be processed from your sound card.


If you are going to exchange it then you can get a GTS250 with HDMI out that requires you to connect an spdif cable internally and is limited to 5.1 dolby.

Or you can get an ati 4xxx or 5xxx card with a built in sound chip and 7.1 surround sound through hdmi without that SPDIF cable. (god, that sounds like fanboyism...) The 5xxx series have some problems with drivers and HD support yet, but given time that should be fixed. The 4xxx series are rock solid, but not the latest and greatest. I'd recommend the 5750 or the 4870 for gaming needs.


Also... it might be possible that you don't need to do any hardware changes at all. What version of windows are you running? If it's windows 7 then the drivers for you sound card (your audio is being processed from your sound card) might not be up to it.

And this may be obvious, but did you make sure you hooked the spdif cable up correctly to the new sound card?

Thanks for your response I appreciate it. I do have the SPDIF cable hooked up correctly and I am using windows 7 64 bit. However, I had this problem even with windows xp with the same graphics card so I don't think it is because of my operating system? I tried it using a DVI to HDMI adapter and it still didn't work. I am currently using a DVI to HDMI cable and the audio is not working.
