ok i just bought the inno3d 9400 gt 1 gb ddr2 but why does it say memory clock:333mhz (666mhz data rate) is it 333mhz or 666mhz?
im confused cz i can play all games on high settings and no problems

DDR stands for Double Data Rate - basically it transfers data two directions (RAM>Bus, Bus>RAM) per clock cycle, effectively doubling it's bandwidth over SDR (single data rate, 1 direction per clock).

So your RAM is running at 333mhz, but it's running like SDR ram at 666mhz.

This applies to all DDR so far except DDR5, which effectively transfers at FOUR times it's clock speed.

DDR2 = DDR x 2
DDR3 = DDR x 3

so if a chip is ddr2 and states 333 mhz
it'll run at double the speed , 666 mhz

ddr3 333 mhz
runs at 999 mhz

No, DDR3 at 333mhz still runs at 666mhz effective. DDR3 is just a different specification that allows for higher clock speeds and lower power usage, it does not transfer data three times per clock. You CAN get much higher clock speeds out if it, but clocking DDR3 at 1100mhz will still only give you 2200mhz effective speed, not 3300mhz.

GDDR5 is the only common ddr specification (so far) that will run at more than twice it's clock speed - 4x. If you clock GDDR5 at 1100mhz it's effective speed is 4400mhz, which is why ATI's newer cards list such high memory clocks.

To sum it up... no, you can't just multiply the number behind DDR and get the effective speed.

i just assumed it worked like that
haven't really LOOKED at the speeds of DDR3

i just knew how it performed in systems
wasn't really worth the switch to it imo

only intels new toys force you to it
