I am considering buying the ECS 9800GTE card but have reservations because I don't understand this:
1. What is GTE? I've seen GT and GTX and GTS before, but not GTE.
2. The product page on ECS website (http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Products/ProductsDetail.aspx?detailid=982&CategoryID=5&DetailName=Specification&MenuID=54&LanID=9) says "Powered by NVIDIA® GeForce™ 9600 GT GPU". Is this possible?

WHat I want to know is this: is this card a normal 9800GT or not? I don't want to end up with a crippled card or simply a rebranded 9600gt (I'd rather buy 9600gt for less money). I hope someone can help. Thanks

That link basically shows that it's a 9800GT with arctic cooling on it. The speed on it is identical to a stock 9800GT. Based on memory and core clock speeds, it isn't a crippled version--it's the same speed.

Personally, I wouldn't spend too much extra, unless you're concerned with noise from a GPU fan.

A 4870/4890 or a 4850 would put out a whole lot more power/dollar.

Anyhow, I hope the link helps, as well as my explanation. Happy buying!

Thanks! From what I have managed to find, this is a so-called "green version", underclocked to 550 MHz from the standard 600 MHz. Still buying it as the price is right at the moment at Newegg.

Green Edition ? Buying that is probably one of the worst decisions you'll ever make .

Eh? Why so?

If it's cheaper and eats less power...

Well, I don't think this is a bad decision given that:

1. I'm on a very tight budget and there's a $15 rebate at the moment, bringing the price down to a very attractive level
2. I'm upgrading from 8500GT, so even underclocked it should be more than enough for my needs (I don't play Bioshock or Crysis)
3. Apparently it can be overclocked back to standard settings (at least one Japanese guy did it)
4. Apparently the larger fan is quieter than on most other cards.

I was originally looking for a fanless 9600GT but they sold out before I could buy any and then this came along, fitting nicely within my $100 budget. So if the card is really quiet and doesn't die on me in the next couple years, I'll be more than happy.

I'd not be too sure about clocking it back to stock speeds, the card is designed to use less power, meaning that it's core is given less voltage.

If your budget is $100 I'd say take a look at the hd4850 unless you're looking for something that doesn't use much wattage. It'll outperform the 9800gt solidly - it matches the 9800GTX+ and GTS250 for performance.

You can get the IceQ version for $100 on newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161244

HIS does a good job on those coolers, they're quiet and work great.

What's with the whole "green" thing... you're NOT saving the enviroment really by using a card that uses SLIGHTLY less power .
As for the volts... is the card really undervolted ?
Ehh , either way , it's a stupid decision .

I know it's kind of late to reply, but the card IS overclockable. I created a gaming profile for it to run at 620/1015/1550 (core/memory/shader) versus its stock 550/900/1375 speeds and it hasn't failed in TF2 (the only 3D game I have that requires graphics).

Decided to stick with NV, eh?

I'm glad that you can clock it nicely after all, but there's something in me that's compelling me to say...

You would have done better for your money with a 4850.

*cough* excuse me... *cough* *cough*
