If I wanted to do CrossFire with my 4870 would I need another 4870 or could I pair it with a 4890 or even a 4870x2?

You can pair your 4870 with a 4890 or 4870x2 but the whole setup will be hampered by the weaker card, making it pointless.

Sell your 4870 and buy a 4870X2 if you want.

You can put them in CFX , but getting them to work is a huge pain in the ass .
Your best bet is to put two regular HD 4870's in CF , given that you already have one .

If I remember correctly, the 4890 will clock down to 4870 speeds if you crossfire them together.

So... probably not such a great idea to spend the extra money on a 4890.

I have seen a couple of reviews of 4870x2s and 4870s crossfired together giving a nice boost in synthetic benchies, but that's with synthetics - specifically 3dmark vantage and sometimes '06. I haven't seen in game reviews with it. It seems like you have to have a 1gb 4870 at stock clock speeds for it to work properly and it is a pain to set up regardless. Also, you'll want to make sure your motherboard supports CrossfireX (3 gpus, 2 different gpus, etc.)

So... to answer your question... Yes you can, but it might not - probably won't - be worth the hassle.
