HI I'm currently testing one old gigabyte radeon 9250 in my sistem, the card is not mine but the owner asked me to test it if it still works because he already got a new system with pci-e and I still got crappy agp pc, well not really bad, but its old. The problem is that he lost the driver cd and he only gave me the manual, but it doesnt say which driver version it uses, but I searched the internet and found a driver web page and I installed the version 5.6 CATALYST of a driver pack from ATI that includes the driver display 8.14and the control panel 5.6. It works pretty good, the are no errors, at least the system doesnt say anything, but there is one thing that is not normal. (NOTE: before installing these drivers I had already uninstalled the legacy drivers from my older card, cause thats what the amd-ati web page said I had to do first, first I removed the older card, put the new one, uninstalled the old drivers, then installed the new drivers) When I start the PC it doesnt show up the ATI tray icon, then if I want to open the control panel it doesnt show up, I have to restart the runtime so it can show up, but if I change anyting there like the brightness of the video, if I close the panel and play a game for example, or reboot, the changes dont save or they dont show up or keep, only if I reopen the control panel they show up again, well that happened with the brightness. The same happens with the tray icon, it doesnt stay there, i have to activate it from the control panel. The resolution and the color bit are ok, if i change them in desktop properties they save normally. Also I have a game CALL of DUTY, that looks very dark, if I increase the brightness it doesnt do anything, and on my older videocard it looked fine, all other games are fine though. So what ya think is the problem? Wrong driver version? Maybe if I download the driver pack from the manufacturer site gigabyte(which is version 5.5) or the AMD-ATI site(but i think they dont have drivers for this old card and older because it doesnt matter how old the card that i select is, it always gives me a driver pack that says it's only compatible from radeon 9550 up to x1950 and is much more recent than the one I installed. I hope you can help me THANKS.

Sections in a post as long as that would be nice ... anyway :
The 9.3 legacy drivers , right ?
When you change settings on CCC , do you click apply too ? Or do you just close it from the X ?
As for the resolution , as I understood you can't set it to the highest possible resolution your monitor allows ?

of course I click on apply, then I click ok to close the control panel, but they dont save. The resolution its ok, i can change it to the highest and it stays there. Only the changes I make in the CP are the ones that doesnt save, like the brightness or the tray icon. Ohh and the legacy drivers I uninstalled were the 5.1 I think because the other card was older.
Try a different driver version, monitor, etc.
It sounds like the card is just fine. Did the customer give specifics about the problem he was having with it?

Nope, he just wanted me to test it to know if it works, so he can sell it. I'll try another driver version. You think maybe the previous driver didnt uninstall correctly? Do you think I should clear the windows TEMP folder?
Well if you want to be SURE then you should use driversweeper in safe mode (http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/) to remove any leftover driver components then use ccleaner's registry cleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) after uninstalling the drivers.
The temp folder is doing... absolutely nothing. Clear it if you want, but it shouldn't make a difference to the driver.
You should try a different compatable driver version (after uninstalling again and using ccleaner & driversweeper) with the card to see if it's just that version that's having the trouble. Also... try a different monitor...

Hey guess what? it worked! I installed the version 5.5 Catalyst control panel (not ccc) and the display driver 8.13. They are exactly one step below the other drivers that didnt work well, arent they?, but the control panel is way different than the Control center, in fact, its the same I had with my radeon 7000. Its impressive how just a bit different driver version and control panel can make the difference, now the tray icon appeared inmediately after reboot and all the changes save, including the brightness in Call of Duty, its not dark anymore. Besides, the game looks better. Thanks for the help again guys!
