9600gt in 3-way sli?

Heh i was wondering wether or not it would be possible to put 3 9600gt in sli or if its worth running my pcie in 8x vs 16x? I was also wondering if 2 gtx260 216shader would be faster and worth the $$$ but i dont think i have the psu (550w 2 12v rails @ 25a 82% efficiancy) thanks for your help in advance. I apologize for typos since im using the slim keyboard on an ipod touch.:D

Two GTX260 216sp is cheaper than three 9600GT, and the latter is definitely not worth it. Or you can just buy a single card, the Radeon HD 4890. Although in any case your PSU won't be enough.

And that PSU is enough for a GTX260 216 SP and for a HD 4890 . As mr entropy said , the HD 4890 would be a better buy , because it's considerably faster .

Well 2 260's would run me 100bux more + I already have a mobo with the 780a and 1 9600gt. As for ATI they're fine but my mobo is nvidia.

Hmm, for the prices you're looking at you could get a second 9600gt and be set for a while, two 9600GTs can perform on a par with the GTX260.

But, for less than 2 gtx260s you could get a gtx275 or hd4890. The only bad thing about getting the 4890 would be that you couldn't get a second one for Crossfire later.

Of the two choices you listed... ehh, neither is particularly good in my opinion, but for price/performance the 9600gt is still going strong. Pick up another and wait for prices to drop on the GTX275.

I guess for now 2x 9600gt is more than enough to do what I want and should be powerful enough until i can afford a gtx275 since i have the nvidia mobo I also get hybrid sli with my on board so I get a bit of a boost for using nvidia over ATI. thanks for the suggestion RK sounds like a winner to me. The only real plus to the ATI cards is the power consumption i usually prefer them when im on a limited amount of power. :D

I wouldn't so much call it a rock as a mountain. I haven't been building systems for a while and just recently left behind my old optiplex g400 :p however in that time I was using my laptop which can play games (source mainly). However i managed to get a hold of a dragon orb for my p2 and I got it from 400mhz to 1.5ghz ^,^ plus when did i say anything about a gtx285 that's way outta my budget as is the 4890. Im sure it does perform better if you have an AMD northbridge.

Lol , you can put an ATi card on an nVidia motherboard , you just can't put them in CF .
And that HD 4890 is fairly cheap . It goes for around 260-270 USD on newegg , while the GTX285 is 350+ USD . AND you can get the HD 4890 running at 1Ghz core and about 4200-4400 Mhz on the memory easily .

I knew i could use ati with my nvidia mobo i just prefer that evrything matches. Btw 250 isnt exactly cheap for me im only 16 eh? The 4890 looks nice and intend on buying one in the future but right now im on a slim budget (considering i just built a $600 rig this week) in say amonth or so i can do some upgrades but i definitly cant afford the 4890 =\ the 4870 looks nice but im not to sure. Considering i can buy a 9600gt for 70bux from my friend and i already have one that seems a good route for the next year or so. My main reason to sli is because i couldnt afford a 4890 or 275 at the time i bought my stuff and ill be able to get another 9600gt soon.

I only bought the Acer M7720 because it's priced at around P59,000 (around $1205). While: Core i7 920 + Intel DX58SO + 2x2GB DDR3 RAM + Antec 300 case + Xigmatek 650w + MSI HD4870 512MB + Western Digital 640GB HDD + Asus DVD-RW w/ LS = P62,000 (around $1265), no monitor, software (OS and others), speakers, mouse and keyboard. Get a better mobo, tri-channel RAM and the 1GB 4870 or 4890 and it'll be even more expensive. ;)

Adding a third 9600 GT is physically impossible... only 8800 GTX , 9800 GTX and GTX280 ( don't know about GTX275 and GTX285 cards , although the latter should support it ) support three way SLi .
