It was based on the R300, but with improvements in the Memory Controller to improve Anti Aliasing performance, also it had improvements in the shader core for the F-Buffer implementation which allowed to run shaders with unlimited instruction lenght (Even though it never was exposed on DX9, only on OpenGL)
