The Progenitor
We know that this card is DirectX 10.1 and Shader 4.1. We will fix it soon. We have to add those options to the drop down lists.

This card draws 1/2 the power of the HD 2900 XT . Good job ATi .
Funny thing is , that this card actually is faster than the HD 2900 XT .

well, ATi should discontiue the HD2900 series because if this card is out, no one will buy the HD2900...

so...I'm planning on selling my Geforce 8600GTS and buy one of these, I have a 450W Power supply thermaltake up and running, is it worth adquiring the HD 3870? or will I need to buy a new power supply just for this?, or maybe I'll just get a 3850 which arguably consume less power

So does this card beat the 8800GT?

Wow 256 bits still satisfies graphics cards even after half a decade since its introduction.(Albeit with 3.6 times the memory speed)

I think a 450W should work . However , the performance difference over the HD 3850 no doubt makes this card the better buy . @anonymous - There was no real need for 384bit/512bit memory bus cards , the amount of memory bandwidth was high.. but not useful .

The last bit of newness in the RV670 is the addition of PCI Express 2.0 connectivity. PCIe 2.0 effectively doubles the throughput of PCIe connections, with very little drama. PCIe 2.0 devices like the RV670 remain backward-compatible with older motherboards.

Do NVIDIA vid cards run better when matched w/ MB's running NVIDIA chipsets?

The amount of vRAM isn't as important as the clock speeds , amount of stream processors ( or pixel pipelines vertex pipelines on older cards ) and ROPs and TMUs .

Was a good deal at the original price of 219.00 US. At 269.00 US I would go for the 8800GT. Glad I got my HD3870 at the original price.

For the anonymous who left; 'so...I'm planning on selling my Geforce 8600GTS and buy one of these, I have a 450W Power supply thermaltake up and running, is it worth adquiring the HD 3870? or will I need to buy a new power supply just for this?, or maybe I'll just get a 3850 which arguably consume less power'

Both the 3870 and the 3850 consume next to nothing when compared to high end graphics cards. A 450 watt power supply will have no problems with either (assuming you aren't using any hardware that is out of the ordinary for gaming requirements)

Bear in mind that an 8800 GTS draws 147w, approximately 40% more than the 3870, and those run perfectly on a 450w psu

incidently, the shader operations per second... :O

Do Nvidia even have anything CLOSE to that?

It's slightly slower than the 8800 GT ( not by a huge margin , but well.. not by a minor one either ) . But it's considerably cheaper than the 8800 GT , so if you can't afford the 8800 GT , the HD 3870 is a very good option .

from my experiences with this card:
-I use it with 350W ~noname PSU, 10A 16A. ( amd x2 4800, 2G ram, hdd WD 500GB, 2x120mm case fan). no problems.
-hot hot hot. cooler seems to keep it at 90-93°C on load with fan at ~45-50% speed. Fan speed needs tweaking.

Anyone had interference problems with this card??? I hear noises in my speaker and they seem correlated with the processed image (eg: in fur rendering benchmark they change consistently with the fur-donut position).
-sorry if my english is bad and i didn't explain myself well (or if my question is out of context)

No problems with my 3870 ... no noises 65º Load temp with 50% fan [840/2500]. Ocs good however u dont want the fan over 50% (unless u want to go deaf)

320 shader processors!?!?

64 shader processors that can do 5 things at a time , rather .

If this card'd shader clock wasn't locked to the core ... and running at 1.8 Ghz ( Like some OCed nVidia card's shader clocks are running ) , then it could put out over half a million shader operations per second ...
I posted this , because I am bored .

Hi, can anyone tell me the difference between the MSI RX3870-T2D512E-OC V803 and the V120? Can't find it anywhere or am I just showing my lack of experience with these things!

Thanks.

What I can teel you is based on this pic:

The stickers are different and the DVI ports on the V803 are yellow. Only MSI knows the difference right now. Hell they might not even know...

My x1900GT just took a dump after 2.5 years of running at over 90 C under load. From everything Ive been hearing this card,(Im going with the Diamond 3870) seems to be the best on the market as far as bang for the buck. FOR SALE: Slightly used x1900GT, slight video corruption, Great for your 2d applications, $275 OBO. :P

The HD2900, HD3850, and HD3870 have 64 stream processors which can perform 5 operations per clock.

Unfortunately for ATI, it's incredibly innefficient.

Well the X2 prettymuch is two HD 3870's in CF , but on one PCB ... so they should be more or less equal .

With the right mobo combo, a crossfire setup will best the 3870X2 by bus usage. Using an X38 chipset will allow independent graphics cards to run in x16 each, where the X2 version shares a singl x16. That being said, the difference is minimal.

I just bought a quad core phenom computer. It has ATI HD 3200 graphics (integrated???) in it. I want to get the HD3870 card. I haven't opened the case to see what power supply it has, but I'm really don't want to purchase a new supply either. New supply= higher end (more expensive) card. What supply do you know/think would work with the HD 3870???

Yepok, i suggest you to buy HRCS500W, it is very cheap, about 25-40 dollar
