When the 9700 Pro first launched it was revolutionary in just about every way imaginable at that time. It shattered performance records, provided the first usable anti-aliasing, and was the first card to implement PS 2.0. These features along with the disastrous launch of the FX5800 Ultra by nVidia made the 9700 Pro one of the most successful high-end video cards ever made.

This card can still run anything out there literally. For instance, I played F.E.A.R. on it and I had it at 800x600 with almost every graphic setting on medium and not only was it completely playable, it still looked very good. Shader Model 2.0 can still do some nice graphical things. One thing you may not know is that the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro is THE most powerful card that can go inside an AGP2X slot. If you do not believe me, go to ATI's website, that's where I found out. So if you have an aging PIII computer with only AGP2X, you can turn it into a PC that can handle some light gaming, especially since this card will offload things from the CPU (make sure the CPU has SSE instructions though, 3DMark05 and 06 require it to run, so modern games probably need it too). This card is also good for running old games at maximum detail and res. For instance, I ran Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force on this machine with literally every detail setting on high, the highest res my monitor can do (1280x1024), full AA and AF. I used FRAPS while playing and the framerate never dropped below 60.

What's so great about this card as there have been bigger performance jumps.
The only reason it looks revolutionary is that Nvidia just failed so badly.

The 9700 Pro was the godamn $h|t in the day. This thing demolished records and is just an incredible card. I remember saving up for one and practically skeeting my pants when I got it. So good. I was very sad when I sold the computer with it in it. Although I upgraded from that to a 8800 GTS 96 SLI. Little bit of an improvement eh?

Is it just me, or did every geforce card up to the GF4 seem to be...exactly the same card. Wow, with no competition, nVidia really lacked performance and innovation. ATI certainly changed there ways with the 9700 though!
